Middle River 7-9 Silver Interview

Middle River 7-9 Silver Pre-Season Overview
Coaches Tim Herd, Don Bailey, Antwain Nelson, and Josh Fortner began coaching together four years ago, as a 6-7 team overloaded with six year olds. Since that time, both coaches and players have come a long way, making it to Harford-Baltimore’s (HB) 6-8 semi-finals two years ago, and winning both HB’s 6-8 Championship as well as MDYF’s Division II State Championship at Morgan State last year.
This year the now 7-9 Silver Middle River team is very confident for the upcoming season, they return almost all of the players from last year’s Championship team and only three players are in their first year. While experience at the 7-9 level is an issue for several teams, this is one of Middle River’s biggest strengths. Coach Tim’s team has six players entering their sixth year of football, some could play at the national level, but because of their relationship with coaches and other players on the team, the group has stuck together; seven of the boys even play basketball and wrestle together.
The team camaraderie was improved even further in the offseason as many played indoor football keeping players fresh and in a football mentality. In past years the team played flag together, but sometimes grabbing a flag as opposed to breaking down to make a tackle teaches bad habits and can create timid players, something not tolerated with the Middle River Organization.
While the coaches are competitive, their main focus is on teaching the kids proper football techniques and fostering discipline and teamwork. It helps that the Renegades have no selfish players and the most outstanding players are also the hardest workers. While MDYF watched the team practice, the intensity was high and the competiveness shown by the coaches translated to the players.
Coach Tim mentioned that practice can get brutal some days due to the competiveness, but it helps out with toughness against opponents and once the team steps on the field, they play well as a unit.
The Renegades take last year’s success with a grain of salt. They know that there is always movement between teams each year, so you never really know what to expect until the start of the season. The team is focusing on getting better every day and will face each challenge as it comes.
“It’s all about this year!” Last year’s team beat every opponent by at least two touchdowns, and hadn’t been down until the Division II Championship game when GORC went up two touchdowns on the Renegades in the first quarter, before they rallied back to win the game in the second half. Coach Tim wants to be challenged from day one, so get ready HB!
Dalys Talley VP of the Middle River Organization set up this interview and brought Coach Tim into coaching. Dalys has been active in youth football for 14 years, during which he has coached in 11 HB Championship games and has won eight of them. Coach Tim and his staff watch and are advised by Dalys and the older age group coaches like Coach Donnie (8-10) to replicate what they do with his younger team. Thank you to the Middle River Organization, best of luck this year and we hope to see you at the Championships!

Warhawks Overview

Warhawks Preseason Overview
The Howard County Warhawks have been around for 7 seasons; during this time while several organizations have experienced decreasing participation rates, the Warhawks have sustained their registration numbers and are one of the largest and most respected organizations in the state. The Warhawks are filled with talented players and coaches at all age groups, when MDYF asked Coach Alex Pagnotta of the 10-12 National team what their secret to success was, he replied: “Our goal is to maximize the playing time for our football players. Any opportunity we (Warhawks) get we’ll add another team to the age group. Instead of having a team with 32 players, of which half will only get to play the minimal play rule, our organization will split the team into two, thereby allowing players to get the maximum amount of playing time possible. A player who may have only played 6 plays a game throughout the year will now have an opportunity to start for the entire game. Not only does this keep players motivated at practices and games, but it also keeps the parents happy (and off of the coaches back!). The Warhawks will do anything we can to ensure that we don’t turn away or discourage any youth football players.”
For those who do not know Alex Pagnotta, he has been involved with the Warhawks since their inception and has been the head coach of numerous championship teams. He is respected within the Warhawks organization as well as across the state. Alex told MDYF that some of the biggest keys to having a successful team are building strong camaraderie, hard work, and chemistry. Adjacent to the Warhawk’s practice field is a monster of a hill, which Coach Pagnotta has his players run every practice; the hill represents an imaginary opponent that the team must run and conquer together. Last season Coach Pagnotta had T-shirts made for his team that said “We Conquered the Hill, You’re next”.
The Warhawks have built a great reputation with Howard County Parks and Rec, and play all of their home game on the beautiful turf fields at Western Regional Park. The location makes for a great experience on games days, where as many organizations will be playing in dust or mud by week six, the Warhawks playing conditions remain as crisp and clean throughout the season. The Warhawk Organization has done a great deal to contribute to their playing fields, by hosting various fundraisers and events they’ve raised enough money to provide the fields with a beautiful announcers booth, scoreboard, and concession stand.
Maryland Youth Football would like to thank Coach Alex Pagnotta and the Howard County Warhawks for their cooperation and wishes them good luck and good health for their upcoming season. We hope the next time we see you will be playing at M&T Bank Stadium for another Championship!

Overlea vs Pasadena Bucs 2009 scrimmage

Pre-season Highlights!

On Tuesday, August 11th the 11U Pasadena Buccaneers from Anne Arundel County scrimmaged the 8-10 National Overlea Orangemen from Harford-Baltimore at Fullerton Park. Both teams played hard and showed good discipline; it DID NOT look like a preseason game, as the Bucs and the Orangemen seem primed and ready for the start of the youth season. At the conclusion of the game players, coaches, and parents from both teams got together to discuss appreciation for one another and even got together for a two team cheer! The event was a success for both teams, and the sportsmanship demonstrated was phenomenal. MDYF got some great highlights, check them out to the left!
